Great talk, thanks for sharing your experience. I learnt lots of new stuff.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but mostly this is vertical scalability (apart from CDN) and I was wondering if you would mention some horizontal scalability techniques, perhaps like load balancing, CQRS, database sharding or replication. Do you have any posts or talks on horizontal scalability?

Uframe is really awesome tool it works well and good with IE..but it in not working with Firefox and chrome..Do I want to make some changes to work with Chrome and Firefox?

Hitting 127.0.0.1 means if you have IIS, it is going to make a hit to IIS and cause IIS to abort the request. unnecessary cpu consumption. it does not speed up browsing noticeably, but it saves unnecessary cpu and disk usage.

this addon filters the URL before even before dns resolution call

Changing localhost to 255.255.255.0 allows the browser to determine that it should drop the request. Otherwise the request is redirected to your local HTTP server. If you don’t have one, the request will time out.

Hi Omar,

Thanks for the link, you forgot to make clear why you are changing the entries from localhost to 255.255.255.0. I assume this makes things easier when doing web development on the same machine but it would be nice if you gave the details on why you made the change.

I don’t know why CVS is even something people talk about and use anymore. It’s a joke now that we have REAL source control out here such as SVN, TFS (well I don’t really like TFS), Git, etc.

What the hell is this CVS or VSS shit still being talked about in 2011 for God sakes! We’re all the way in 2011 and you’re still using these old piles of shit? Stop! That’s such an amateur way to run a shop. Yea they used to be the way to go, 8-10 years ago! Technology changes and improves ten fold….start changing your process and tools for God sakes.

Omar’s solution is a very good one and one thing that I find very interesting is that Microsoft took this exact approach. There is now an IIS plugin that does exactly that. It is called Dynamic IP Restrictions and can be found here: http://www.iis.net/download/DynamicIPRestrictions

I tried your approach vs. having cascading deletes and simply doing:
delete top (10000) aspnet_Users where IsAnonymous = 1 and LastActivityDate <= GETDATE() – 30

Your approach took 1:30 mins where the other approach took 3:20 minutes, so yours obviously taking less than half the time!

I wasn’t familiar with powershell and was getting some errors trying to run the script but after a little research, I realised that the script was not written properly to work so i amended it to this:
